Purpose
We aim to honor the legacy of Robert Remak, a pioneering biologist and embryologist, by showcasing his remarkable contributions to science and highlighting the challenges he faced due to 19th-century antisemitism in Prussia. We hope that Robert Remak's story will serve as a reminder of the discrimination still present in biology today and encourage researchers and students to speak out against injustices in their university, laboratories, or workplace.
About Us
We created this website as a part of our AUBIO 411, History and Theory of Biology capstone course at the University of Alberta - Augustana Campus. This course guides us through the history and philosophy of biology, focusing on the fields of evolution, genetics, and developmental biology.
We are dedicated to preserving the memory of Robert Remak and shedding light on the historical struggles of Jewish academics. Our platform serves as a tribute to his scientific achievements and his resilience in the face of discrimination.

Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that the land on which we gather, traditionally known as asiniskaw sipisis (Stoney Creek), is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground for many Indigenous peoples. The land on which the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta is located provided a travelling route and home to the Maskwacis Nêhiyawak, Niitsitapi, Nakoda, and Tsuut'ina Nations, the Métis, and other Indigenous peoples. Their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create a rich heritage for our learning and our life as a community.
